This 1989 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo targa 3.3 is a very nice example from the last year of construction 1989 – the ultimate version of the Porsche 930 Turbo.
General information about the 5-speed turbo
The 930 Turbo introduced by Porsche in 1975 was a revolution and immediately became an icon. The Turbo was the top model in the Porsche house and combined brute performance with a very good equipment. With its significantly wider body, wide rims and distinctive Turbo spoiler, it was instantly recognisable.
The 3.3 Turbo was built from 1977 to 1988 without any major changes. It was not until the 1989 model year that the ultimate evolutionary stage of the Porsche 930 Turbo was launched – the ’89 Turbo.
The 1989 model year was the last model year of the so-called “G-model” of the Porsche 911. In the same year, the successor 964 was launched.
For this last model year, Porsche equipped the 930 Turbo with the modern and reinforced 5-speed G50 gearbox and also fitted the car with a hydraulic clutch. These changes significantly improved the handling of the 930 Turbo. The now closer-ratio gearbox results in smaller rev jumps, allowing the turbocharger to build up pressure more quickly. The hydraulic clutch can be operated with significantly less force and also with more precision, allowing for more comfort and better launches.
Driving performance also improved with the new transmission.
The suspension tuning was also thoroughly improved with larger torsion bars on the rear axle, modified anti-roll bars and harder-tuned shock absorbers for the ’89.
As a Targa, the so-called ’89 turbo is particularly rare and exclusive, as only 92 vehicles were built in total.
The new price of a 930 Turbo targa in Germany in 1989 was DM 140,500, which was DM 7,500 more than a 930 Turbo Coupé. A Golf 2 GTI, by comparison, was around 26,000 DM.
Of these 92 cars, 40 were for the North American market and had a slightly reduced power engine, The remaining 52 cars for the rest of the world had the 300 hp (220 kw) engine. 26 vehicles are left-hand drive and 26 vehicles are right-hand drive.
The example we are offering is one of these right-hand drive cars built only 26 times and was delivered new to the UK with country code C16. Optional factory equipment includes heated driver’s seats, 40% limited slip differential and retread leather.
The colour combination is plain black (A1A1) combined with black leather.
The original cheque book with 12 entries is present and documents the maintenance history and low mileage.
We know of 2 previous owners in the UK before the current German owner bought it in 2008 with approximately 47,500 miles and imported it to Germany. The car has a German historic registration.
The car is in original condition with a very nice original interior.
However, as the car has been part of a collection for the last few years and has been driven very little, we recommend a fresh service and some detail work on the cosmetics. The last oil change was in June 2021.
The car can be viewed by appointment. A lifting platform is of course also available for this purpose.
