The Aston Martin DB4 is a sports car that Aston Martin offered in 5 different series from 1958 to 1963. Only 1100 cars were built in total.
The engine is a 6-cylinder in-line engine with two camshafts and 3.7 litres displacement. In the basic version it was supplied with petrol by two carburettors and produced 175 kw (240 hp).
The lightweight Superleggera tubular frame was designed by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan. Its Italian appearance was a real sensation at its world premiere at the 1958 “London Motor Show”. Although the design and bodywork came from Italy, the DB4 was the first Aston Martin to be built in the new factories at Newport Pagnell. The DB4 was developed again and again and is therefore divided into several series, which describe the respective stages of evolution.
In 1962, shortly before the end of the series, Aston Martin introduced the last evolutionary stage of the DB4: the series 5. In order to create more space for the passengers on the back seat, the body was extended by 9 cm and the roof was raised very slightly.
In addition, other small details, such as the tail lights, were changed.
The vehicle offered here is one of these rare and very sought after Aston Martin DB4 Series V. In total only 55 cars of the last Series V were built.
For the introduction of the Series IV in 1961, a more powerful engine, the SS (Special Series) engine, was offered for the DB4. It had 3 SU carburettors and revised cylinder heads with larger valves, so that it achieved an output of 194 kW (265 hp), which was roughly equivalent to a 10% increase in power. In addition, the SS engine had an oil cooler as standard, which was only available as an accessory in the standard cars.
Besides the possibility to drive the SS engine in a normal DB4 Saloon, there was also the newly introduced special model DB4 Vantage, which combined the SS engine with the headlamp covers of the DB4GT called “Covered Headlights”, which here additionally wore a chrome ring. Only the cars with the covered headlights are DB4 Vantage and these also have their own chassis number range, unlike the Saloon.
How many of the only 55 DB 4 Series Vs built were also delivered as Vantage cannot be said with certainty today, but it remains one of the rarest and best versions of the DB4, rarer even than the DB4 GT, which was built 75 times in total.
Because of the many similarities, the DB4 Series V Vantage is also often confused with its successor, the DB5, from which it differs only in a few details. Even the most famous of all DB5s, James Bond’s official car in the film Goldfinger, was actually a DB4 Series V Vantage. This was equipped with the 4.0 litre engine of the DB5 and thus became the prototype for the DB5 and the official car of James Bond.
This right-hand drive vehicle offered by us was delivered on 09.08.1963 in the colour “Snow Shadow Grey” as a DB4 Series V Vantage. This is evident from the available factory records and Heritage Certificate.
The early service history up to 1968 is documented in the factory records including the usual service work and the repair of minor damage to the front.
The history is fully documented via the original British logbook and later registration papers.
The first owner was the large clothing factory Darley Mills Co Ltd in Leeds, Yorkshire. The second registered keeper, who was also from Leeds and presumably a dealer, acquired the car on 12/08/1966 and shortly afterwards sold it to another textile company, Glenoit (UK) Ltd, based in a suburb of Leeds. In 1969 the car was then registered to the dealer Palace Motors in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1971 the next registration was to Joseph Boyd, also of Newcastle upon Tyne.
In addition to the log book, there are other documents such as tax discs and emissions test certificates from the 1970s to 1990.
Joseph Boyd kept the car for 15 years until he sold it in 1986 to the owner of Wildae Restorations in the South West of England.
The latter bought the car for himself and began restoring the car in his own business in 1990. For this purpose, the car was disassembled into its individual parts, all assemblies were carefully checked, overhauled and – if necessary – renewed.
The car was repainted in the original Aston Martin colour “Midnight Blue” and in 1991 the restoration was completed.
All restoration work was fully documented by photographic material.
Following this restoration the car achieved first places at the following two Concours d’elegance events:
Summer Concours Silverstone June 1991 (Class C)
Autumn Concours Stanway House October 1991 (Class F)
In addition, the car was photographed for a large-scale advertising campaign for the polish of the British manufacturer Simoniz and was featured in several advertisements.
In 1992, the car was sold to Germany to a collector from Essen, who cherished the car for over 16 years. In 2008, 13 years ago, the current German owner bought the car and continued the same good care.
He installed a set of new Borrani spoke rims with new whitewall tyres. A complete second set of original spoke rims is also present.
The car has been regularly moved and serviced. We can send you a list of the individual works if you are interested.
The last inspection including inspection and refilling of the operating fluids took place in March 2021. Overall, the vehicle on offer is in good general condition.
The car has its original engine with “matching numbers.”
